Acrylic painting on distressed canvas mounted on wood panel
(1700mm x 850mm x 18mm)
Batman has always been my favourite comic book character. Notice I chose the phrase "comic book character" over "superhero" to sidestep that annoying conversation about superpowers.
Lots of people say Superman was their favourite. I thought he was a bit of a nob. So I've painted Batman kicking seven shades of shit out of him.
Anyway, I loved Batman so much as a kid and even into my teenage years that I had loads of comic books and graphic novels. Great memories of my past that I decided to chop up into collages and make this piece.
I've gone for a kind of film noir approach with just a few highlights of basic colours and let the heavy lifting of the work be done by the strong black lines. The distressed canvas gives a real retro comic page vibe.
It's a whopper this piece. I don't know where the hell you'd put it in your house, but if you're rich enough to have a house it'd fit in, then you're rich enough to afford it.
KAPOW!
